Tuition for looked after children
Tuition for children in care and previously looked after children, planned with the Virtual School around the PEP. We ask every tutor to work in a calm, trauma informed way.
Who this tuition is for
This tuition is for children in care and for previously looked after children. We also arrange tuition for children out of school, children with SEND, and catch up and exam tuition bought by schools. Each has its own page, and the tuition hub brings them together.
Previously looked after children include children adopted from care and children who left care on a special guardianship order or a child arrangements order. When you get in touch, let us know which group the child is in, because the funding works differently.
Virtual School and the personal education plan
The personal education plan is our starting point. The Virtual School, the designated teacher and the carers already know it well, so it helps if you share the PEP targets you want the tuition to work on, along with the year group, the subject and where the sessions need to happen.
If you would like session notes for PEP reviews, just say. We will agree with you what is recorded and how it is shared.
Pupil Premium Plus
For the 2026 to 2027 financial year, the Department for Education has set Pupil Premium Plus for looked after children at £2,690 per pupil. The same rate applies to previously looked after children. Funding for looked after children is paid to the local authority and managed by the Virtual School Head, who decides how it is used for the children in their care. Funding for previously looked after children is paid to the school. The rate is published in the Department for Education pupil premium technical note.
Trauma informed tutoring
We ask tutors to work in a trauma informed way. In practice that means the same steady adult, sessions that feel predictable, and time for the child to build trust, especially after a move of home or school.
Who can ask us to find a tutor
Anyone who holds the plan for the child can get in touch:
- Virtual Schools and Virtual School Heads
- Social workers
- Fostering agencies
- Designated teachers for looked after and previously looked after children
- Foster carers, kinship carers and special guardians, together with the social worker or Virtual School
Safeguarding
Every tutor goes through our safer recruitment checks before they meet a pupil. That includes an enhanced DBS with a children's barred list check and references, in line with Keeping children safe in education 2026.
How to find a tutor
Get in touch with the child's year group, the subject, the PEP targets you want the tuition to follow, and whether the child is looked after or previously looked after. We will look for a tutor with the right subject knowledge and an enhanced DBS, then agree the practical arrangements with the Virtual School or designated teacher.
Where we arrange this tuition
We work across the North West and Yorkshire. Choose your area to see how to find a tutor there.
