What Does a Cover Supervisor Do? Salary, Duties and Career Path

2026-04-20 6 min read

Cover supervisors are a core part of how UK secondary schools manage staff absence. The role is often misunderstood — it isn't 'supply teaching lite', and it isn't classroom assisting either. Here's exactly what cover supervisors do, what they earn, and where the job can lead.

What does a cover supervisor actually do?

Cover supervisors deliver lessons that the absent teacher has pre-planned. You don't plan, mark or assess — you supervise the class through the work, manage behaviour, keep students on task, and feed back to the regular teacher. It's classroom presence, behaviour management and clear communication, not subject teaching.

Do you need to be a qualified teacher?

No. Most cover supervisors are graduates, ex-LSAs, returners or aspiring teachers building classroom experience. What schools actually look for is presence, calmness under pressure, strong behaviour management and reliability.

Typical cover supervisor pay in 2026

Day rates typically run £90–£130 in 2026, depending on location and the school. Long-term assignments may convert to AWR-equivalent pay from week 13. Cover supervisors employed directly by schools are usually on a Grade 5–6 support staff scale.

What makes a good cover supervisor?

  • Calm, consistent classroom presence
  • Clear, firm behaviour management without confrontation
  • Adaptability across subjects you may not know well
  • Reliable communication with school staff and the absent teacher
  • Comfort with secondary-age students (most cover roles are KS3/KS4)

Career path: from cover to qualified teacher

Cover supervision is one of the most direct routes into teacher training. A year of strong cover work gives you a portfolio of classroom experience, references from senior leaders, and clarity about which phase you want to teach. Many of the teachers we place qualified after starting on cover.
