From Teaching Assistant to Qualified Teacher: A Roadmap

2026-03-20 7 min read

Many of the UK's best teachers started their careers as teaching assistants. If you're a TA who's been inspired by the classroom and is ready to take the next step, there are more routes into qualified teacher status (QTS) than ever before. Here's your practical roadmap.

Route 1: University-Based Teacher Training (PGCE)

The traditional route involves a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at a university. You'll need a degree (2:2 or above) and will spend time in at least two school placements. Bursaries are available for shortage subjects, and student finance can cover tuition fees and living costs. Your TA experience will be a significant advantage in applications.

Route 2: School Direct

School Direct allows you to train in a school from day one, often with the same school or trust you already work in. There are salaried and fee-paying options. The salaried route is particularly attractive for TAs, as you earn while you train and can often stay in your current school community.

Route 3: Teach First

If you have a degree and are passionate about social mobility, Teach First places you in a challenging school with intensive training and support. It's a demanding programme but offers a fast track to QTS with strong leadership development.

Route 4: Assessment-Only Route

For experienced TAs who have been teaching classes independently (common in some SEN settings), the assessment-only route allows you to demonstrate QTS standards without further training. You'll need evidence of substantial teaching experience and a degree.

Funding Your Training

Government bursaries of up to £28,000 are available for certain subjects. Student loans cover tuition and maintenance. Some schools and trusts offer their own sponsorship schemes. Your GAC consultant can advise on the options available and connect you with training providers.
