Interview Tips for Supply Teachers: Stand Out from the Crowd

Whether you're new to supply teaching or looking for your next placement, the interview process is your chance to showcase your skills, flexibility, and passion for education. Here are our consultants' top tips for making a lasting impression.

Research the School Thoroughly

Before any interview or informal visit, research the school's Ofsted reports, values, and recent news. Understanding their ethos — whether it's a faith school, a STEM-focused academy, or a school with a strong arts programme — allows you to tailor your responses and demonstrate genuine interest.

Prepare Your Evidence

Supply teaching interviews often focus on adaptability and classroom management. Prepare specific examples of times you've successfully managed challenging behaviour, adapted lessons at short notice, or built relationships quickly with unfamiliar classes. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers.

Show Your Flexibility

Schools value supply teachers who can hit the ground running across different year groups and subjects. Highlight your range of experience and willingness to take on varied assignments. If you have experience across both primary and secondary settings, make sure to mention it.

Ask Thoughtful Questions

At the end of the interview, ask questions that show you're thinking about how to contribute: 'What does your behaviour policy look like?' or 'How do you typically brief supply teachers on the day?' These questions demonstrate professionalism and a desire to integrate smoothly into the school.

Follow Up

A brief thank-you email after the interview goes a long way. It reinforces your interest and keeps you top of mind when the school next needs cover. Your GAC consultant can also follow up on your behalf to gather feedback and keep the relationship warm.
